How to Prepare For a Camping Trip

When you are thinking about going for an outdoor adventure of any kind, preparation is key. Ensuring that you have the necessary equipment and supplies that you need when going for a camping trip can mean the whole difference in your experience and overall enjoyment. When you prepare well, a camping trip can be an exciting and fun experience that you will always live to remember. Here is a useful guideline on how to prepare for your upcoming camping trip.

  1. Know who will be going for the camping trip with you

The first thing is of course deciding on who you will be going with for the camping trip before you even start making any preparations. In fact, this is very important as it determines how you will prepare for the camping trip and the number of things that you will need to consider. If you are going for the camping trip with just your family, preparing will be a little easy. However, if the camping trip is being organized for your friends or a scout troop, you will need to be more diligent in preparing for it.

  1. Get health and insurance info

Even before you do have done anything else; it is of paramount importance that you get the health and insurance information of all the people who will be joining you in the camping trip. In case someone gets injured during the trip, the kind of care that you will give them will be determined a lot by the insurance information. You will need their health information a lot when you are preparing for the trip. For instance, if one of your friends has an allergy to peanuts, then you won’t be packing peanut butter. For those who use routine medication, it is essential that they carry it along. Remember that health and safety should always reign supreme during your camping trip and avoid anything that could compromise it.

  1. Buy a fully stocked first aid kit

Accidents can happen while you are on the camping trip and it is essential that you prepare well for any likely event. For this reason, you will need to get a first aid kit that has all the necessary things that you will need. It is also a good idea that you teach yourself a little about general first aid as well. Your first aid kit should have personal medications, adhesive tape, roll bandages, cotton swabs, sterile gauze pads, tweezers, scissors, safety pins, bee sting kit, sunscreen, splinting materials and personal information e.t.c.

  1. Organize for your accommodations

You will need to know where to sleep while on your camping trip. Shelter is of course necessary and you will need a number of things to cater for your accommodation such as tent, extra stakes, ground cloth or tarp, shade tarp/ rope/ poles/ stakes, axe/ hammer, dust pan or brush and mat for the tent entrance. Beddings will also be needed such as sleeping bag, pillow, sheets/ blankets, air pump, air mattress/ tarp/ sleeping pad, repair kit for the air mattresses and utility bags for your storage needs.

  1. Pack enough food

Food should be packed based on the number of people going for the camping trip and the number of days you will be away. Enough foods should be packed for three meals plus a snack per day. Avoid packing lots of food items that are perishable such as milk, cheese and chicken. Meat and dairy products should be avoided as they can easily go bad and eating them could make you seek. Trail mix makes an incredibly perfect option for fruit for breakfast, snacks, left-over’s for dinner or crackers for lunch. Remember that you will also need water in large amount as well to last you for the entire period you will be on the camping trip.

  1. Gather everything else that you need

Besides food and the items highlighted here above, there are a lot of other things that you will need for your camping trip and you will need to gather and pack them for the trip. Try to pack them in some small and lightweight bags. Smaller items could be put in rolling suitcases or a backpack and your sleeping bag could be put in the garbage bag. The good thing about garbage bags is that carrying them around is easy and you can fold them to occupy a considerably small space if needed. Most importantly, avoid over packing as this will only make things more stressful for you. Once you have everything that you need, just road it in your car and you will be ready to hit the road right away.

Preparing for a camping trip is something that you will need to take very seriously as this will determine the kind of experience that you take home by the end of the day. What you will need to carry will vary considerably especially due to the unique needs of those involved. It is highly advisable that you don’t carry earrings or jewelry during your camping trip as this will only bring unnecessary troubles. If they are caught on things as you hike, they can wreak havoc on your ears not to mention that jewelry can easily get lost unknowingly.

Remember that the main objective of going for a camping trip is to have fun and you should avoid any distractions that are likely to alienate you from this. For food, it is important that you take into account the interests of everyone on board and carry foods that they like. This is more so for the snacks as some of them like beef jerky make such an ideal option to carry a long. It is advisable that you cook your own food during the camping trip as this is not only fun but will also help you slice your budget in a major way. Finally, consider sleeping in a cabin as it is more sheltered and offers pleasant accommodation when it is raining.
